I don’t know about you, but each year I just dread hearing about the “new year, new me” goals that everyone goes on about. It usually consists of the typical; get fit, eat healthy, change lifestyle, go out and experience life more etc etc BUT is this all realistic? Personally I don’t think so, unless you are a highly motivated ambitious person, which the majority of us are not.
However, that’s not to say we CAN’T have these goals to set for ourselves, it’s just that I feel we need to be more realistic about them. For example, if I were to set myself the goal of exercising everyday and losing 10kg in 3 months, that would be unrealistic. Although I could set it to exercising at least 2-3 times a week and my goal by the end of the year is to lose 10kg. That way we also take a lot of the pressure of, and extra stress that we don’t need.
I find life has it’s way of getting on top of us, and those goals we set at the beginning of the year when we were so bright, sunny and motivated, all become a memory of the distant past. Why though? Because it is hard. It’s hard to stay feeling motivated ALL THE TIME. It’s hard to stay organised when you are working full time and trying to earn your living. It’s hard while you are also trying to maintain and manage relationships and a family. Life gets on top of us because that is the reality of things.
Now, that’s not to say we shouldn’t set goals for ourselves, because goals are positive and can be great to work towards. But it also doesn’t mean we have to set the same old cliche goal year in year out and still get no where.
So this year my major goal is going to be to PAUSE. Pause to enjoy life in it’s moment and stop looking towards the next thing. Enjoy what I have and be more appreciative. Most of you can probably relate to this and the whole “rushing woman syndrome”. I really want to work towards being grateful for all that I have as opposed to constantly thinking about what I don’t have. I truely believe that by taking some time out each day to pause and really think about all that we have, can do a world of good to our lives. I’ve even recently heard about bullet journalling which could be something I try out.
Another major goal for me is to decrease my stress levels as they have been at an all time high this past year. Surprise surprise, ways to decrease stress involve eating healthier balanced meals and exercising regularly. I’m fine with this, as the main focus here is to decrease stress. It’s not about weight or looking like all the other thousands of instagram famous people out there. I find this goal will become more attainable in a way, because of the focus being about calming the mind. With that I am interested to get outside more and explore the world and take it all in.
Other mini goals are to save money, as life is short and I want to get out there and see the world. Travel is big on my list, but so is getting married and owning a home. So saving is a must!
Reading more and educate myself is something I feel is pretty important. I used to love reading and learning new things, but again we get stuck in the same old routine living day to day and lose sight of the little things that made us happy. I’m a huge Harry Potter geek, so have ordered the complete collection to start reading this year.
